Description
Up for sale is an extremely rare Luther Goddard & Son fusee pocketwatch.  Luther Goddard was the first person to attempt to manufacture watches in America.  His watches are of great historical significance.  This particular watch was made during the earliest period of the company, sometime between 1809 and 1825.  This watch is in outstanding completely original condition.  The movement is signed L. Goddard & Son Shrewsbury N 335.  It was made in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts in the style of the English fusee watches of the time.   The silver pair case is in very nice original condition.  The outer case is engraved J. Fernald (or Femald--I can't tell).  It is very similar to an English case but is cruder in manufacture due to the comparitively lower level of technology available in this country at the time.  You can see inside the case that it was turned on a lathe but doesn't have the high level of finish of its European counterparts.  The white porcelain dial is in very nice condition except for a small chip at the outer edge between 8 and 9.  The chip does not extend into any of the marks or numbers and is mostly obscured by the bezel.  The original gold hands are also of a unique style.  The crystal is a thick bullseye style and is very scratched and is no longer very clear.  It appears to be original, however, so it is better left untouched.  The movement is in good running order.  It is a verge style escapement and has no jewels as is typical of Luther Goddard watches.  Watches like this in original condition do not come up for sale very often.  Not only is it a watch, it is a rare piece of American horological history.
