Description
SquareTrade © AP6.0 PATEK PHILIPPE VINTAGE CHRONOGRAPH 1463 18K SCREWBACK Patek Philippe collectors consider the reference 1463 vintage chronograph to be among Patek’s most important watches. Introduced in 1940, this chronograph has a unique profile, owing to the highly domed crystal and massive screw back. In a family of otherwise dressy Patek chronographs, the 1463 is, well, sporty looking. While ‘sporty’ and ‘chronograph’ go hand in hand these days, this watch’s relatively massive construction was revolutionary in its day. The screw back introduced a water and dirt resistance otherwise unknown in the 1940s. In addition to being amazingly well preserved and 100% original, this watch also features a rare champagne colored dial with tachymeter scale along the periphery (another sporty touch). Original case is 18k yellow gold with dimensions of 35mm diameter by 14mm thick. From lug tip to lug tip, this watch measures 43.2mm. As mentioned, the caseback is threaded and screws down into the center part of the case. This was Patek’s first chronograph to implement the screw back, so as to achieve increased water resistance. The case also features a second, internal protective cover for the movement. As you can see in the pictures below, Patek has stamped "Vacuum" into the inside of the 18k caseback. My favorite aspect of the case, in terms of the aesthetic, is the decoration and attention to detail on the crown and chronograph pushers. The crown has the Calatrava Cross in relief, while the round pump style chronograph pushers have a sunburst pattern engraving. The original dial is, well, rare and amazing. The champagne/gold color is very rare. Featuring applied hour markers along with the ‘12’ and ‘6’, the dial also a seconds chapter and tachymeter scale, sunken subdials (for seconds and chronograph 30 minute totalizer), blued chronograph hands and golden leaf style main hands. The dial is 100% original, untouched and clean. Movement is the manual winding Patek Philippe chronograph Caliber 13-130 with 23 jewels, column wheel construction, adjusted to 8 (!) positions and stamped with the Geneva Seal. As mentioned previously, the caliber is protected not only by the massive screw back, but also by an internal cover. There is no question that the movement was well protected – it is in pristine condition and still shines like the day it was assembled. Strap is a new, hand sewn medium brown Patek Philippe crocodile with vintage 18k Patek tang clasp. This is an amazing vintage Patek Philippe chronograph!
