Description
This is an antique eighteen (18) karat yellow gold lady's pocket/pendant watch. It has orangy red guilloche enameling and is pave' set with sixteen (16) old natural diamonds (fourteen [14] are old mine cut diamonds & two [2] are old European cut diamonds), with a total weight of approximately 1/2 carat. It measures approximately 36mm in diameter, not counting the stem, crown and swivel bow), and 11mm in thickness.   The diamonds are very clean (VS clarity), and very white (G/H color). One (1) old mine cut diamond is chipped, but the chip is not noticeable with the unaided eye. The floral design background is made of yellow gold, in a technique reminiscent of Champleve' enameling (I am not sure that this is indeed Champleve' enameling..)    Some of the enameling is missing or damaged, however the watch is still very attractive and there is no apparent damage to the gold itself. I imagine the movement could be taken out and the enamel could be restored by an expert (we don't do it!). The watch - including the movement but without the chain - weighs 47.3 grams and the 18 karat gold itself probably weighs around 25 grams, but I am not sure!   I forgot to take a picture of the dust cover; it is plain gold and is marked with the case manufacturer's trademark  (intertwined "JS and 18"). It's also stamped with the number "78027" (same as in the pictured diamond back cover) and with the number "181". The hinges are in good shape and the push-button open/close mechanism for the front cover works well. All three covers snap tight.   The white porcelain dial has Arabic numerals - for hours and minutes; it is in good shape and free of stains, cracks, hairlines, etc. The hands appear to be original. The second-hand works; it's dial is slightly recessed.    The watch is in working condition, but I have not timed it and it may need servicing. The mechanical jeweled movement appears to be original (it has the same name as marked on the dial); it was made in Switzerland for Harris & Shafer (Washington D.C.). The case was probably made in the US, probably by the manufacturer whose trademark appears on the dust cover (JS).  We estimate this watch to be about 100 years old (could be even older, but we don't have the time to research it).   Because we could not replace this watch if lost in shipping, S&H is by insured Registered Mail only.   The chain & slide came with the watch. The chain is NOT gold (probably gold filled or gold plated); the Victorian-style silver slide is set with a pear shape garnet; it is stamped: "JBC STERLING". The chain and slide are NOT for sale. They are a gift from us to the buyer of the watch!     This watch is sold "AS IS" - Final Sale.   Click here to view all our diamond and estate jewelry auctions.
