It is a rare artist indeed who has acquired the necessary skills to create the three general types of Navajo jewelry -- overlay, inlay, and set stones -- at collector and museum level quality. Alvin Begay is one of these elite Navajo artists. Most of his work literally ends up in those expensive Santa Fe, Sedona, and Scottsdale boutiques so I felt fortunate indeed to find this outstanding and unique reversible inlaid holloware necklace and earrings set in Gallup. The magnificent 26" long mirror polished necklace is absolutely stunning in its near perfection. It features nine holloware beads with inlaid clear heart robin's egg blue turquoise on seven of the beads and inlaid genuine natural Mediterranean red coral on the other. The black designs you see on each bead are actually true shadowboxes with the design removed from the sterling. Each bead is ¼" and actually consists of two shadowboxed beads seemlessly overlaid. The four 15/16ths" by 1 and 3/16ths" oval beads are engraved with ancient sun ray, stairstepped pueblo, and water designs. The arrowhead shaped bead in the center measures 1 and 3/18ths" by 1 and 5/16ths," the two spirit beads above measure 1 and 1/8th" by 1," and the two rainbow beads above the oval beads measure 1¾" by 15/16ths."
