As a Native arts dealer, I make an average of four or five buying trips to the Southwest every year. And every now and again - not nearly as often as I'd like - I come across something truly special. Sometimes it's a rare one-of-a-kind piece by a well known artist. Sometimes it's a long forgotten piece found hidden at the back of a dusty vault. On my last buying trip though, it was a whole box of long forgotten pieces found hidden at the back of a dusty vault. All of these pieces date from the mid 1960s to the early 1970s and none of them were ever sold or worn. This fantastic Santo Domingo necklace was among the contents of that dusty old box. Completely hand carved in yellow serpentine, it features a dozen beautiful birds of graduating sizes. Deceased Santo Domingo artist Joe Garcia is likely responsible for this highly collectible piece of Native art - Joe was bringing a lot of this stuff in at the time. Very likely the nicest piece I currently have in my possession. Traded in Gallup, New Mexico in the early 1970s. Necklace size is 33 inches. This piece bears no artist's hallmark - very common for the period. In order to preserve the unique character of this piece, it will not be polished or prepped in any way. As always, satisfaction is 100% guaranteed - if you are unhappy with your purchase, send it back within 7 days for a full refund. Includes gift box and Certificate of Authenticity. About the Stones: Serpentine: New Mexico, Arizona, Peru Serpentine was used in the southwest for carving as early as prehistoric times. It appears in a wide range of colors and combinations including green, tan, grey, yellow, brown, pink, red, black, and creamy white. Serpentine is also traded under the names Fish Rock, Frog, and Ricolite. An authentic Santo Domingo creation Traded in Gallup, New Mexico in the early 1970s About The Turquoise Indian The Turquoise Indian is a reputable and well established retail business specializing in authentic Native American jewelry and pottery. Since 1982, we have been a major reliable source for buyers of Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni creations. Hundreds of buying trips to the Four Corners region have given us the opportunity to meet and interact with a multitude of talented Native American artists. Our vast experience in the Southwest has taught us how to obtain the best jewelry at the best prices - prices that we have proudly passed on to our loyal customers throughout the years. Buyer Beware! eBay is experiencing a drastic increase in the number of items being misrepresented as Native American jewelry. Jewelry made in China or the Philippines is NOT Native American made and does not belong under the eBay category of "Native American". Imported knockoffs are hurting legitimate eBay sellers as well as those Native American craftspeople who are being forced out of the jewelry business. If authenticity is important to you, buy only from reputable eBay sellers who offer genuine Native American made merchandise. At The Turquoise Indian, we take pride in offering our customers 100% authentic Native American made jewelry. The Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990 states that "it is illegal to offer or display for sale, or sell any art or craft product in a manner that falsely suggests it is Indian produced, an Indian product, or the product of a particular Indian tribe." Each and every one of our beautiful offerings is in full compliance with this Act. Authenticity is confirmed by our buyers in person. We buy only from reputable Indian art dealers located in northwestern New Mexico - the heart of the Navajo and Zuni nations. In many cases, jewelry is purchased directly from the artists themselves. Buying in person allows us not only to confirm authenticity, but also to hand select the finest pieces, the best stones, and to secure the absolute lowest prices.
