Description
My photos and text are NOT PUBLIC DOMAIN. Copying them without my express written permission is a violation of Copyright Laws and a violation of eBay Policy. This is a miniature pocket watch or that was probably used by a lady as a pendant watch. It is signed "ROSE WATCH COMPANY NEW YORK", "PAUL BRETON SWISS" and "E. HEUER & CO." E. Heuer & Co., Rose Watch Company, Paul Breton Swiss Now to complete the rest of this history. In 1912 Charles-Auguste and Jules-Edouard at the urging of their American partner Henry Freund (New York City Jeweler & Importer) decided to use the trade name "ROSE WATCH COMPANY" on all watch movements imported into the USA. Thus on April 2nd, 1912 the company was renamed "Ed Heuer & Co., Rose Watch Co.". It was during this time period that all watch movement had to bear the name of the maker as required by U.S. Customs. It was also during this time period that a high customs tariff on complete Swiss watches was in place. Therefore, Heuer, would send a completed movement without a case. The movement would then be installed in a watch case made in the U.S.A. It was also during this time period, starting in 1914 that Heuer started producing wrist watches. These early wristwatches look like a pocket watch that had wire lugs attached and this is exactly what they were. In 1922, Heuer stopped producing the "Rose" watch brand. So, for approximately 10 years the Ed Heuer & Co. use the name Rose Watch Co. on all the watches sold in the U.S.A. So when you see a early watch with the movement signed "ROSE W. Co." it was manufactured by Ed Heuer & Co. For more information please read Heuer & TAG Heuer (MASTERING TIME) by Gisbert L. Brunner in collaboration with Marc Sich, Swiss Timpiece Markers 1775-1975 by Kathleen H. Pritchard and Vintage Wristwatch Report Vol. 4 No. 9 by Bruce Shawkey. Most of my information has come from these sources as well as my own personal research. HEUER owned the name PAUL BRETON. DESCRIPTION: Dial: The dial is approximate 19mm in diameter. The dial is off white with a tint of silver. The hour markers are black Roman Numerals. Has minute markers between the hour markers. Hands: The hands are original and of a blue-purple color. Case: The case is solid 14kt gold and signed as follows: "ROSE WATCH COMPANY", " NEW YORK" with the ROSE WATCH COMPANY logo of a Rose between the words New and York. It is also signed "14K" in a diamond. It also has the serial number "78442". The hinged case has a gold bow over the crown that swivles. It also has a small gold loop on the bottom of the case so that it can be used as a pendant. The solid gold hinged case is approximately 20mm in diameter. Movement: The movement is signed "PAUL BRETON SWISS", "E. HEUER & CO.", and "15 JL'S", "3 AD'S". The movement works perfectly and keeps accurate time. Crowns: The crown sets the hands and winds the movements. The crown is gold and works perfectly. Crystal: The crystal is original without any cracks, breaks or noticable scratches. This is an extremely rare miniature watch. I have been collecting Heuer since 1966 and this is the only Heuer's Rose Watch Company miniature pocket watch that I have seen or owned. It is a real piece of history that is very unusual. Please view my eBay Store for more Heuer, Abercrombrie and Fitch, Chronographs and Timers.
