Description
This is an extremely fine Charles Frodsham pocketwatch in 18kt gold dating from 1851. This is a high-grade piece designated by the AD FSMZ signature characteristic of Frodsham's high-grade production. It is a demi-hunter, and is quite unique in that the case is made so that you have to pry open the front lid; there is no catch or button to press. There is also no glass aside from the small window on the lid. According to some authoritative English watch experts, such a watch from this date might have been a display piece for Frodsham's stand at the Great Exhibition of 1851. The case design enabled a rather thin profile as Frodsham's compeititor at the time, E.J.Dent was marketing thin fusees. The watch in total only measures 1mm thick.Indeed, this is a relatively thin chain fusee watch, and shows all the hallmarks of high British horology. This watch runs fine and very accurately. The movement is a full gilt quarter plate movement with a diamond endstone and bimetallic balance. It winds by key and also sets by key. I have a key for both; please note the gold Breguet ratchet key in the picture is not included. The full 18kt gold case is fully hallmarked for 18kt gold with marks approximating its date to 1851. The casemaker is "FM". The bow is also hallmarked with the crown. It is reeded on the sides, and has beautifully made hinges. The entire case is engine-turned with a heraldic crest on the rear. There is some rubbing to the engine turning on the edges. The watch has the serial number, 7146, which is stamped on the case, the dial and movement. The dial is porcelain with NO hairlines or damages of any kind. The writing is crisp and beautiful. The hands are blued and all original. Nothing has been refinished. The watch measures 46mm in case, and is 1mm thick.----The only issue with the watch is that the enamel numerals on the front have lost some of their blue enamel. However, this is not noticeable to any degree. Please email all questions. I, as the seller, am not responsible for any transit issues. No returns unless I have grossly misrepresented the item. Thank you very much.On Oct-03-08 at 18:03:03 PDT, seller added the following information: Please note, the thickness is 10mm, not 1mm. I apologize. Thank you.
