Tuareg camel caravans played the primary role in trade across the Sahara until the advent of modern transportation. The Tuareg have great respect for beauty; beads form part of a woman's personal adornment and transportable wealth. Item Description A collection of ancient rock crystal and smoky quartz beads collected in northern Mali. These beads are likely Ducth in origin dating to the 1600's (17th century). The exquisite coloration of these beads displays beads of pure transparency, to beads with a gold tinge and yet others with a peach/pink expression. All beads have been hand drilled and the resulting funnel shaped hole in each of thebead is visible through the beads. The shapes range in cushion shaped to faceted to round, in the case of the cusion and ropund shapes, thes surfaces of these beads have been hand polished . The rock crystal beads are easily distinguishable as these are very difficult to cut (and highly esteemed), and as a result, the fracture planes of the stone exhibit flat surfaces, some have been polished into round beads;the smoky quartz beads are drum-like in shape. Collected in Mali in the area between Kidal and Gao; these beads are greatly apprecited by the Tuareg in these remote areas. Wonderful patina of age, time and usage.
