Description
I am pleased to present to you this beautiful estate piece. This is an extremely rare and unique antique brooch / pendant. These were called miniatures because they were paintings done in miniature size for use in jewelry. Traditionally, these were most often worn or carried as one might carry a photograph. These could have been painted on metal, ivory or bone. I am not sure what this miniature is painted on, however the rarity of this piece is its subject matter. I have never come across one so exotic as this. This is of a distinguished bearded gentleman in robes and turban, carrying a sword. The robe is a lovely light shade of green with gold trim, tied by a red sash. He is wearing a red garment under his robe, and there are gold slippers upon his feet. The gentleman appears to be standing in a garden. The painting is surrounded by a lovely lace-like 22K gold frame. Work of this type is called Cannetille, which is a technique using coiled wire to make florettes and designs. There is a lot of detail in the Cannetille, with a substantial weight in 22K gold for this type of piece. The photographs are blurry, but the colors in the miniature are definitely crisp and clear, with more detail than my camera could capture. There was some glare, so my shadow also makes an appearance in these photos. The Cannetille is a very rich and deep color of gold. The back of this piece looks as if it has a slightly hammered pattern to it. I should note that the pin in the back has been either added, altered or replaced. It is unknown when this might have been done. There is a ring on the top, so this brooch may easily be worn as a pendant. The size is a generous 2 1/4" x 2 1/2", making this miniature painting quite suitable for display, as well. This is a rare piece~~a beautiful piece~~ for a collector of fine jewelry or art. This piece makes an exquisite gift, or would be a treasured addition to your own collection. I should like to state that this information is based on my research of miniatures.
