This ancient handcrafted Mother of Pearl Pelican is a tribute to an artist who is long gone. It is 42mm long and can be worn as a necklace. It has a silver chain that can be easily removed if the buyer wants to display this antiquity. The body and eyes contain lapis lazuli. Surrounding the lapis lazuli in the body is a Chimu animal or god.The Chimu culture was developed around 900 A.D. in the Moche Valley South of Lima Peru. The Chimu were a coastal culture. The rulers were treated like gods and lived in an elegant palace in Chan Chan. The people paid tribute to the rulers with hand made products like this. Around 1470 the Inca's conquered The Chimu and most of its silver and gold went to adorn the Incan Temple of the Sun.
